New Hanover County cuts ribbon on the new Cape Fear Museum; doors open August 18
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County leaders cut the ribbon Monday on the new Cape Fear Museum of History and Science at 230 Grace Street, completing the county's investment in the Grace District in downtown Wilmington. The museum officially opens to the public on Tuesday, August 18.
The ceremony marked the completion of Project Grace, a more than $77 million investment that placed a new Main Library and a new museum on a single downtown block through a public-private partnership with Cape Fear Development. The building was designed by LS3P and constructed by Monteith Construction.
Founded in 1898, Cape Fear Museum is the oldest history museum in North Carolina. Its new home features more than 400 artifacts, the interactive Cape Fear Stories exhibit, a 60-seat planetarium, the Port City Play space for young children, the hands-on Science Matters gallery, and the Curious Nature outdoor learning gallery.
“In less than a year, this board has opened a new Main Library, a new Northchase Library, and now this museum,” said Board of Commissioners Chair LeAnn Pierce. “That is what investing in quality of life looks like, and this campus will serve our residents for generations.”

The museum will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Admission is $16 for adults; $15 for seniors, students, and military with valid ID; $10 for children ages 3 to 17; and free for children 2 and under and for museum members. New Hanover County residents receive reduced admission: $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, students, and military, and $5 for children ages 3 to 17. County residents will also be admitted free on Residents Free Day, which is the first Sunday each month, beginning Sunday, September 6.
